Free safety stock template
Free safety stock spreadsheet with two methods side by side: the max-minus-average method and a simple days-of-cover buffer.
Safety stock is the extra you keep for slow suppliers and busy weeks. The sheet shows two common methods for every SKU so you can pick the one that fits, then adds the result to your reorder point.

How to use it
- Get average daily sales from the last 28 to 90 days.
- Find your busiest normal day (or week ÷ 7) for max daily sales. Leave out one-off spikes.
- Use your usual lead time and the slowest recent one.
- Compare both methods. The max-avg method protects more when supply is unreliable.
- Use the reorder point column that matches the method you choose.
The math
Days method = avg daily sales × safety days

FAQ
Which safety stock method is best for a small store?
The days method is easiest to explain and adjust. The max-avg method is better when lead times swing a lot. Neither needs statistics.
Can safety stock be too high?
Yes. Every unit of safety stock is cash on a shelf. Keep more for best-sellers with unreliable suppliers and less for slow movers.
