How to use it
- Get cost of goods sold for the year from your profit report.
- Enter inventory value at cost at the start and end of the year.
- Read turnover and days of inventory for each line.
- Look hard at anything with more than 180 days of inventory.
- For a shorter period, use COGS for that period and change 365 to the number of days.
The math
Days of inventory = 365 ÷ turnover

FAQ
What's a good inventory turnover?
It depends on the product. Fast-moving consumables often turn 6 to 12 times a year, while gifts or furniture may turn 2 to 4. Compare your own products against each other first.
Can I use retail value instead of cost?
Use cost on both sides. Mixing sales value with inventory at cost makes turnover look higher than it is.
