What is Inventory sync?
Inventory sync is the process of keeping stock quantities consistent across two or more systems, such as your Shopify store, a POS, a warehouse system, or a marketplace channel.
For a small Shopify store, inventory sync matters most when you sell in more than one place, like Shopify plus a physical counter, a marketplace, or a wholesale channel. Without it, the same unit can get sold twice, once online and once in person, and one of those customers ends up disappointed.
Use inventory sync to make sure the stock number shown to customers is always true. Check how often your systems update, whether it is real time or on a schedule, and confirm variants match up correctly, not just total quantities. If sync lags, build in a small buffer so you do not oversell during the gap.
Example
A candle store sells on Shopify and in a physical shop using a POS connected to the same inventory. A customer buys the last 2 units of a scented candle in the shop. Inventory sync updates the Shopify listing from 5 units to 3 units within minutes, so online shoppers cannot order candles that do not exist.
Common mistakes
- Assuming sync is instant when some integrations update on a delay, which causes overselling during that gap.
- Syncing quantity but not variants correctly, so a size or color mismatch sends the wrong item to the wrong channel.
- Running two systems as the source of truth at once, which creates conflicting stock counts instead of one accurate number.

FAQ
Does inventory sync fix overselling completely?
Yes, but only if the connected systems actually talk to each other automatically. If you update stock in one place and have to manually re-enter it elsewhere, that is not sync, that is double data entry with extra steps.
Is inventory sync the same as a reorder point?
Not by itself. Sync keeps stock numbers consistent across systems, but it will not warn you before you run out. You still need a reorder point or a forecast to know when to buy more.
