Inventory glossary
What is Inventory accuracy?
Inventory accuracy is how closely your recorded stock levels match the actual physical stock on your shelves or in your warehouse.
If your system says you have 40 units of a candle but you only have 25, every decision built on that number is wrong. Reorder points fire late, purchase orders get sized wrong, and customers order items you cannot ship. Inventory accuracy is the foundation that forecasting, reordering, and fulfillment all sit on top of.
Small stores lose accuracy through small events that add up: miscounts, damaged stock not written off, supplier shipments received without checking quantities, or manual stock edits that never get logged. Checking accuracy regularly with cycle counts, and fixing the cause of mismatches rather than just the number, keeps the rest of your inventory process trustworthy.
Formula
Example
A candle store counts 50 SKUs during a cycle count. 46 of them match the system exactly, 4 do not. Inventory accuracy for that count is 46 / 50 x 100 = 92 percent. The owner investigates the 4 mismatched SKUs and finds one had a damaged unit never removed from the system.
Common mistakes
- Only checking accuracy once a year instead of in small regular cycle counts.
- Adjusting the system number without figuring out why the mismatch happened.
- Counting fast-moving SKUs the same way as slow-moving ones, instead of checking high-volume items more often.

FAQ
How often should a small store check inventory accuracy?
Small stores do not need a full count every week. Running cycle counts on a rotating set of SKUs, with fast-moving items checked more often, catches problems early without stopping normal operations.
What causes most inventory accuracy problems?
Common causes are miscounts during receiving, damaged or returned stock not updated in the system, and manual adjustments made without a clear reason recorded.
