What is Overselling?

Overselling happens when a store sells more units of a product than it actually has in stock, usually because the inventory count shown to customers is wrong or out of date.

Overselling costs real money and trust. You either refund the customer, source the item fast at a higher cost, or send an apology email and lose the sale. For a small store, a handful of oversold orders in one week can eat the week's profit margin and create angry reviews.

The fix starts with knowing your real sellable stock, not just a number on a shelf. That means subtracting damaged goods, returns waiting for inspection, and anything already promised to other orders. Reordering early, before stock gets dangerously low, is the other half of avoiding this problem.

Example

A candle store shows 10 units of "Vanilla Jar Candle" in stock. Six were damaged in the warehouse but never removed from the count. The store takes 10 orders, then finds only 4 candles to ship. The other 6 orders are oversold and need refunds, backorders, or rush replacements.

Common mistakes

  • Not syncing inventory counts quickly enough across sales channels.
  • Ignoring damaged, returned, or miscounted stock in the available total.
  • Setting reorder points too low for fast-selling items, so stock hits zero before the next order arrives.

Overselling and SteadyShelf

SteadyShelf does not track live stock counts, but by forecasting demand and flagging order-by dates per SKU it helps you reorder before stock runs low enough to cause oversells.

FAQ

Does overselling always mean a system error?

Overselling means a customer paid for an item you cannot ship on time, not that your stock count is slightly off.

How do stores prevent overselling?

Set safety stock on fast movers, and reorder before you hit zero, not after.
