What is Reverse logistics?

Reverse logistics is the process of moving goods backward through the supply chain, from the customer back to the seller or supplier, for returns, repairs, or disposal.

For a small Shopify store, reverse logistics covers what happens after a customer sends something back. That includes receiving the return, checking its condition, deciding if it goes back on the shelf, gets sent to the supplier, or gets written off.

If you do not track this well, returned stock sits in limbo. It is not sellable but it still looks like missing inventory, which throws off your counts and your reorder decisions.

Example

A candle store sells 40 units of a scented candle in a week. 3 are returned because customers did not like the scent. 2 of those are undamaged and go back into sellable stock. 1 is damaged and gets written off. Net sellable units from that batch: 40 - 1 = 39.

Common mistakes

  • Treating all returns as automatically sellable without checking condition.
  • Not updating stock counts until the return is fully processed, which delays reorder decisions.
  • Forgetting to track why items were returned, which hides recurring quality or sizing problems.

Reverse logistics and SteadyShelf

SteadyShelf does not handle returns processing, but accurate on-hand counts after returns matter because they feed into the sales history SteadyShelf uses to forecast demand.

FAQ

Does reverse logistics affect inventory forecasting?

Yes. If returned items are not logged correctly, your sales history looks off, which can skew demand forecasts and reorder timing.

Should returned items always go back into sellable stock?

No. Only undamaged, resellable returns should go back on the shelf. Damaged or defective returns should be separated and either sent back to the supplier or written off.
