Inventory glossary
What is Pareto principle in inventory?
Pareto principle in inventory means a small share of SKUs usually drives most of a store's sales or profit.
For a small Shopify store, this principle tells you where to spend your attention. Instead of tracking every SKU with the same care, you look closely at the handful of products that actually drive your revenue, and spend less time on the long tail.
Use it to decide stock policy. Your top sellers deserve tighter forecasts, safety stock, and faster reorder cycles. Your slow sellers can run leaner, get reordered less often, or get dropped if they tie up cash without returning much.
Example
A candle store sells 40 SKUs. Ranking by revenue, the top 8 SKUs bring in 7,200 dollars out of total monthly revenue of 9,000 dollars. That is 8 SKUs, or 20% of the 40, producing 80% of revenue. Those 8 SKUs get priority for stock checks and reorder timing, the other 32 get reviewed less often.
Common mistakes
- Treating 80/20 as an exact rule for every store instead of a rough pattern to check against your own numbers.
- Ignoring the long tail completely when some low-volume SKUs still carry high margin or serve loyal customers.
- Using one-time or seasonal sales spikes to rank SKUs instead of a longer, steadier sales window.

FAQ
Is the 80/20 split always exact?
No. It is a rough pattern, not a fixed law. Some stores see 70/30 or 90/10. Check your own sales report to find your real split.
How is this different from ABC analysis?
The Pareto principle is the general idea that a few items drive most results. ABC analysis is the practical method that uses this idea to sort SKUs into A, B, and C groups for stock management.
