What is Overstock risk?

Overstock risk is the chance that a store orders or holds more stock of a SKU than it can sell within a reasonable time.

Overstock risk matters because cash tied up in slow-moving stock cannot be spent on bestsellers or other costs. A small store that misjudges demand and orders too much ends up with money stuck on a shelf instead of in the bank.

To manage it, compare order quantity against your actual sales pace before you commit to a purchase order. If a SKU sells slowly, order smaller amounts more often rather than a large batch, even if the supplier offers a discount for bulk.

Example

A candle store sells 10 units of a seasonal scent per week on average. The owner is offered a case pack deal and orders 300 units, enough for 30 weeks of sales. If the scent is only popular for 12 weeks a year, around 180 units will likely sit unsold after the season ends. That unsold stock is the overstock risk turning into real excess inventory.

Common mistakes

  • Ordering based on supplier minimums or discounts instead of actual sales pace.
  • Ignoring seasonality and assuming current demand will continue all year.
  • Not checking lead time, so backup stock arrives on top of stock already on hand.

Overstock risk and SteadyShelf

SteadyShelf forecasts sales per variant and suggests order quantities rounded to case packs, which helps flag when a planned order is larger than what forecasted demand supports.

FAQ

How is overstock risk different from overstock itself?

Overstock risk is the possibility of ending up with too much stock before you order. Overstock is the actual result once it has already happened.

What is the simplest way to lower overstock risk?

Order smaller quantities more often based on recent sales, instead of placing one large order to get a better price or meet a supplier minimum.
