What is Excess inventory?

Excess inventory is stock you hold beyond what you expect to sell in a reasonable time frame, based on current demand.

Excess inventory matters for a small Shopify store because cash spent on unsold stock cannot be used for anything else. A store with too much inventory sitting still can struggle to pay suppliers or invest in products that are actually selling.

To manage it, review slow-moving SKUs regularly and compare stock on hand against recent sales pace. If a SKU has far more units than it can sell in the next few months, stop reordering it, consider a discount to move it, and adjust future order quantities down.

Formula

Excess inventory = Inventory on hand - (Forecasted demand over a chosen period + Safety stock)

Example

A candle shop buys 600 units of a seasonal scent expecting strong holiday sales, but only sells 150 by January. The remaining 450 units are excess inventory. They now sit in storage, tying up the cash that was spent on them until the shop discounts them or waits for next season.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing excess inventory with safety stock, which is intentional and sized to demand variability.
  • Ordering large quantities to hit supplier discounts without checking real sell-through first.
  • Ignoring seasonality and reordering off last month's sales pace instead of the season ahead.

FAQ

How is excess inventory different from overstock?

Excess inventory sitting in a warehouse costs money even if it sells eventually. That cost shows up as tied-up cash, storage fees, and risk of markdowns if the product ages or goes out of season.

What is the difference between excess inventory and dead stock?

Overstock usually means you have too much of something relative to near-term demand, but it may still sell at full price given time. Dead stock is overstock that has stopped selling altogether, often needing a discount or write-off to clear.
