Inventory glossary
What is Inventory to sales ratio?
Inventory to sales ratio compares the value of stock you hold to the sales you generate in a period.
For a small Shopify store, this ratio is a quick health check. A rising ratio can mean you are buying too far ahead of demand and tying up cash in stock that is not moving. A falling ratio can mean you are selling through inventory fast, which is good, but it can also warn you that you are close to running out of stock.
Use it over time rather than as a one-off number. Track it month to month per product category, not just for the whole store, since one slow-moving line can hide fast sellers in the total.
Formula
Example
A candle store has average inventory worth $8,000 for the month and net sales of $4,000 that month. Inventory to sales ratio = 8,000 / 4,000 = 2.0. This means they are holding twice as much inventory value as they sold that month.
Common mistakes
- Comparing inventory at cost to sales at retail price, which skews the ratio.
- Looking at the store-wide ratio only and missing that one slow category is dragging it up.
- Not tracking the ratio over several periods, so a one-time bulk order looks like a permanent problem.

FAQ
Is a lower inventory to sales ratio always better?
Not always. A very low ratio can mean you are understocked and risking stockouts. The goal is a ratio that matches your sales pace and lead times, not the lowest possible number.
How often should a small store check this ratio?
Monthly is enough for most small stores. Checking too often reacts to normal week to week swings rather than real trends.
