What is Inventory shrink causes?

Inventory shrink causes are the reasons stock on hand is lower than what your records say it should be, such as theft, damage, supplier shortages, or counting errors.

For a small Shopify store, shrink eats into profit without showing up as a sale or a visible expense. If you do not know why stock is disappearing, you cannot fix it, and your sales forecasts and reorder points start running on bad data.

Go through shrink causes one by one: check if items are damaged in storage, miscounted at receiving, stolen, or lost between warehouse and shipping. Once you know the main cause, you can fix the process instead of just writing off the loss every month.

Example

A candle store's records show 120 units of a scented candle in stock. A physical count finds only 109. Checking the receiving log shows a supplier delivery of 15 units was logged as received but only 4 made it onto the shelf, likely damaged in transit and thrown out without a note. That explains the 11 unit gap.

Common mistakes

  • Writing off shrink as a flat cost without checking where it happens (receiving, storage, or shipping).
  • Blaming theft by default instead of checking for damage or counting errors first.
  • Not tracking shrink by SKU, so repeat problem items never get flagged.

FAQ

Is inventory shrink always theft?

No. Theft is one cause, but damage, supplier shortages, and counting mistakes at receiving or during stocktakes are just as common.

How do I find the cause of shrink in a small store?

Compare what suppliers shipped against what you received, check storage conditions for damage, and review your counting process before assuming theft.
