Inventory glossary
What is Inventory budget?
Inventory budget is the amount of money a store plans to spend on stock over a set period, usually a month, quarter, or season.
An inventory budget stops a small store from overspending on stock and running short on cash for rent, ads, or payroll. It forces a decision about how much to commit to each supplier order before the order gets placed, not after the invoice lands.
To use it, set a spending cap per period based on expected sales and cash on hand, then check every purchase order against that cap before sending it. If a reorder would push you over budget, cut quantities on slower SKUs first and protect budget for your best sellers.
Formula
Example
A candle store starts the quarter with $4,000 of stock at cost, expects to sell $9,000 of stock at cost, and wants to end the quarter with $5,000 of stock on hand. Inventory budget = $5,000 + $9,000 - $4,000 = $10,000. That is the total the owner can spend on new stock purchases during the quarter.
Common mistakes
- Setting the budget from gut feeling instead of expected sales and current stock levels.
- Forgetting to subtract stock already on hand or on order, which leads to double buying.
- Treating the budget as fixed all season instead of adjusting it when sales run hot or cold.

FAQ
How is an inventory budget different from open to buy?
An inventory budget is the total planned spend on stock for a period. Open to buy is the remaining amount left to spend right now, after subtracting what has already been bought or committed within that budget.
How often should a small store update its inventory budget?
Review it monthly at minimum, and sooner if sales are clearly running above or below plan. A budget set three months ago on old sales numbers will lead to bad purchase decisions.
