Inventory glossary

What is Dropshipping inventory?

Dropshipping inventory is stock that a supplier holds and ships directly to customers on your behalf, so you never physically stock or own the items yourself.

Dropshipping inventory matters because it changes who carries the risk of unsold stock. You are not tying up cash in goods sitting on a shelf, but you also lose control over whether the item is actually available when a customer orders it. If the supplier runs out and does not tell you in time, you end up selling something you cannot deliver.

For a small Shopify store, treat dropshipped SKUs differently from the stock you hold yourself. Check supplier stock feeds often, build in extra delivery time for customer expectations, and keep an eye on which suppliers are reliable. If a dropship item sells well and steadily, it may be worth switching to holding it yourself for better margin and control.

Example

A home goods store lists a lamp supplied by a dropship vendor. The store sells 10 lamps in a week and never touches a single unit. The vendor picks, packs and ships each order straight to the customer, and the store only pays the vendor's cost once the sale is made.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the supplier's listed stock count is always accurate and up to date.
  • Not checking supplier lead times, which can make delivery promises to customers unreliable.
  • Mixing dropshipped and owned-stock SKUs in the same catalog without tracking which is which.

FAQ

Does dropshipping inventory ever sit in my own warehouse?

No. In dropshipping the supplier holds and ships the stock, so you do not receive goods into your own location or warehouse.

Can I forecast demand for dropshipped products the same way as stocked products?

You can, but your forecast quality depends on how accurate and current the supplier's stock feed is. If they do not share reliable numbers, your reorder timing and quantities will be guesses.
