What is Core products?

Core products are the SKUs a store sells steadily, week after week, that make up the bulk of its revenue and repeat orders.

Core products deserve the most attention in a small store's inventory planning. These are the items that pay the bills, so running out of them costs real sales and often a frustrated repeat customer. Knowing which SKUs are core also tells you where to focus your buying time instead of spreading effort evenly across every item in the catalog.

In practice, treat core products differently from new arrivals or one-off items. Keep higher safety stock on them, review their stock more often, and make sure suppliers with long lead times are ordered from early. A stockout on a core product is far more costly than a stockout on a slow mover.

Example

A candle store sells 40 different scents. One scent, Vanilla Oak, sells 60 units a week and makes up 25% of total revenue. The other 39 scents combined sell 180 units a week. Vanilla Oak is a core product. The owner keeps three weeks of safety stock on it but only one week on the slower scents, because running out of Vanilla Oak would hurt sales much more.

Common mistakes

  • Treating all SKUs the same instead of giving core products priority stock levels.
  • Not revisiting the core list, products can lose popularity and new ones can become core.
  • Confusing "core" with "expensive" when it should be based on sales volume and repeat demand.

FAQ

How do I identify my core products?

Look at sales history over several months and rank SKUs by units sold or revenue. The top items that sell consistently, not just during a promotion, are your core products.

Should core products always have the most stock on hand?

Not necessarily the most units, but they should have the most reliable stock coverage, since running out of them affects revenue the most.
