Sell-through rate calculator

What share of the stock you had did you actually sell? Use it to spot over-buys early and decide what to reorder or mark down.

The sell-through formula

Sell-through rate = units sold ÷ (units on hand at start + units received) × 100

Example: you started the month with 120 units, received 40 and sold 84. Sell-through is 84 ÷ 160 = 52.5%.

How to use it

  • High sell-through on a best-seller is a warning, not just good news. Check its days of stock against the supplier lead time.
  • Low sell-through for 2 to 3 months running means stop reordering and plan a markdown. See what to do with dead stock.
  • Compare like with like. A new product, a seasonal product and a staple will never have the same rate.

FAQ

What is a good sell-through rate?

For a 30-day window, many retailers treat 40% to 80% as healthy. Under about 20% a month usually means you over-bought or the product needs a push. Seasonal and new products swing more.

Sell-through rate vs inventory turnover?

Sell-through looks at units for one product over a short window. Turnover looks at cost of goods across your whole inventory over a longer period.

Does Shopify have a sell-through report?

Yes. Shopify's analytics includes a sell-through rate report by product on eligible plans.
