Inventory by store type
Inventory management for Shopify woodworking supply stores
Woodworking supply stores juggle raw materials, finishing products, and hardware across wildly different reorder patterns. Getting the timing right on glue, finish, and lumber keeps projects moving for your customers and cash out of your storeroom.
The inventory problems woodworking supply stores run into
- Mixed variant structures. a single router bit set might have one SKU, while sandpaper comes in dozens of grits, widths, and pack sizes, each needing its own reorder math.
- Hardware minimums. hinges, slides, and fasteners often ship in case packs of 50 or 100 from distributors, so your order quantity has to round up even if you only need 30.
- Finishing product shelf life. stains, oils, and some glues degrade or separate over time, and overstocking slow movers means dead stock you have to discount or toss.
- Lumber and sheet goods variability. species, thickness, and grade create huge SKU counts with uneven demand, and some suppliers only restock certain species seasonally.
- Specialty tool lead times. imported hand tools and specialty blades from overseas manufacturers can take a long time to arrive, so late reorders mean weeks of empty shelf space.
Seasonality and demand
Demand usually climbs in early spring and again before the holidays, as hobbyists start outdoor projects or build gifts. Back-to-school months can bump up basic tool and shop supply sales if you serve students or trade programs. Plan your safety stock higher heading into these windows, especially for consumable items like sandpaper, glue, and finish, since a stockout during a busy season sends customers to a competitor. Slower months, often mid-summer and right after the holidays, are a good time to trim order quantities on slow-moving specialty items and clear out anything approaching its shelf life.
Suppliers, lead times and minimums
You will likely work with a mix of regional hardware and fastener distributors, national tool and abrasives wholesalers, and specialty importers for premium hand tools or exotic lumber. Domestic distributors often turn orders around in under two weeks, while overseas tool and blade suppliers often take several weeks. Case packs and minimums vary a lot: sandpaper and glue often come in cases of 12 or 24, hardware in packs of 50 or 100, and specialty lumber sometimes has no minimum but a long wait for restock.
Worked example
Say you sell a popular wood glue, and it moves 4 units a day on average. Your supplier's lead time is 10 days, and you keep 4 days of safety stock, so your reorder point is 4 x (10 + 4) = 56 units. You want 20 days of cover after ordering, you currently have 30 units on hand and 0 on order, so your order quantity is 4 x (10 + 20) - (30 + 0) = 90 units. The supplier sells this glue in case packs of 12, so you round up to 96 units to place a clean order.
Try it with your own numbers in the reorder point calculator, or size your buffer with the safety stock calculator.
A simple system to start this week
- List every variant separately, including grit, size, species, and pack count, so forecasts are not lumped together.
- Record each supplier's case pack size and minimum order quantity so suggested order quantities round correctly.
- Set safety days higher for consumable finishing products ahead of spring and holiday peaks.
- Flag any finish, stain, or glue with a known shelf life and check it manually before reordering in bulk.
- Review the weekly reorder email and confirm quantities against current shop floor space before approving.
- Track actual lead times per supplier for a few cycles and adjust them if overseas shipments run long.
How SteadyShelf fits woodworking supply stores
SteadyShelf fits well for forecasting and reordering across your abrasives, hardware, glue, and tool SKUs, and it handles the case pack math automatically so you are not ordering odd quantities. It does not track expiry or shelf life, so for finishing products that degrade over time you still need to check dates yourself before approving a large order. It also will not help if you stock the same items across multiple store locations, since it does not do multi-location transfers.

FAQ
Can SteadyShelf track expiry dates on wood stains and finishes?
No. SteadyShelf does not do lot or expiry tracking. Keep a manual note or spreadsheet of expiry-sensitive products and check it before approving large reorders of those items.
We sell lumber by the board foot with custom cuts. Will SteadyShelf forecast that?
SteadyShelf forecasts per Shopify variant based on sales history, so if your board foot or custom cut items are set up as variants with consistent units, it can forecast them. Highly custom, made-to-order cuts with no repeatable SKU pattern are harder to forecast well.
I have two store locations with separate stock. Does SteadyShelf handle transfers between them?
No. SteadyShelf does not do multi-location transfers. It forecasts and reorders based on the inventory data in Shopify, but moving stock between your locations is something you still need to manage outside the app.
