Inventory by store type
Inventory management for Shopify print on demand brands with stocked blanks
Print on demand brands that stock their own blanks have to juggle two inventories at once: raw blank apparel by color and size, and the printed SKUs they sell. SteadyShelf handles the reordering math for both, so you don't run out of a popular blank mid-print-run or overorder a color nobody buys.
The inventory problems print on demand brands with stocked blanks run into
- Variant explosion. a single blank style in 5 colors and 6 sizes is 30 SKUs, and popular sizes like M and L sell out while XS and 3XL sit on the shelf if you order flat quantities.
- Blank supplier minimums. wholesale blank suppliers often set per-style or per-case minimums, so you can't just reorder the 3 units you actually need of a slow color.
- Print defects eat stock faster than expected. misprints, ink bleed, and heat press errors mean your usable blank count drops below what your sales data shows, so reorder points based on raw sales alone can run short.
- Two-tier inventory. you are managing blanks (raw material) and finished printed stock (sellable SKU) as separate pools, and a stockout in either one stops a sale.
- Discontinued colorways. blank suppliers retire colors and sizes with little notice, which can strand your printed designs or force a reprint on a different blank with different sizing.
Seasonality and demand
Print on demand apparel brands usually see peaks around back-to-school, Black Friday through the December holidays, and graduation season if you sell to schools or teams. Blank suppliers' own stock can run thin right before these peaks since everyone orders at once, so place blank orders earlier than usual, not closer to the date. Niche designs tied to a single event, like a holiday graphic, need blanks ordered well ahead of the print run itself, factoring in both the blank lead time and your own printing turnaround. Build extra safety days into your reorder settings for your top 10-20 blank variants heading into these windows, then dial them back down afterward so you are not sitting on excess stock in January.
Suppliers, lead times and minimums
Blank apparel suppliers range from large wholesale distributors with large warehouses to smaller specialty mills. Domestic suppliers often ship within a week or two; overseas suppliers often take several weeks, especially for less common colors or sizes. Case packs are common, often in sizes like 12, 24, or 36 units per style and color, and many suppliers set a minimum order per style or per color to qualify for wholesale pricing. Popular core colors and mid-range sizes restock faster than niche colors or extended sizes, which some suppliers only produce in smaller batches or discontinue without much warning.
Worked example
Say you sell a unisex hoodie blank in heather grey, size L, and you print on demand plus keep some pre-printed stock. You sell 4 units a day on average. Your blank supplier has a 10-day lead time, and you want 5 days of safety stock, so your reorder point is 4 x (10 + 5) = 60 units. You currently have 25 on hand and 20 already on order. You want 20 days of cover, so order quantity = 4 x (10 + 20) - (25 + 20) = 120 - 45 = 75 units. Since the supplier sells in case packs of 24, SteadyShelf rounds that up to 96 units (4 cases).

A simple system to start this week
- List every blank variant (style, color, size) as its own SKU in Shopify, not just the finished product.
- Set a lead time and case pack size for each blank supplier in SteadyShelf.
- Add a safety margin for print defects on top of your sales-based safety days, since misprints reduce usable stock.
- Review the weekly reorder email and compare suggested quantities against your supplier's per-style minimums before approving.
- When a supplier discontinues a color or size, update or archive that variant in Shopify right away so forecasts stop including it.
- Track blank defect rates and expected reprint rates outside SteadyShelf, then fold that buffer into your reorder settings.
How SteadyShelf fits print on demand brands with stocked blanks
SteadyShelf treats each blank variant, like a specific hoodie color and size, as its own SKU and forecasts it individually, which fits how print on demand brands actually run low on specific sizes and colors rather than whole product lines. It will tell you when to reorder blanks from your supplier and round to their case packs and minimums. It does not track which printed design used which blank batch or handle production scheduling, so you still need your own system for matching print jobs to blank stock.

FAQ
Does SteadyShelf know which blank goes with which printed design?
Yes, within limits. SteadyShelf forecasts demand for each blank variant and tells you when to order more from your blank supplier based on their lead time. It handles the inventory side, not the print production side. If you also stock finished printed items as separate SKUs, it forecasts those the same way, independent of the blanks they came from.
Can SteadyShelf manage inventory across my print shop and a separate fulfillment warehouse?
Not currently. SteadyShelf tracks one stock location. If you print at home and also hold backup stock in a second warehouse, you will need to manage that split manually or treat it as one combined number when you check stock before approving a PO.
Does SteadyShelf calculate my true cost per unit including shipping and customs on imported blanks?
No. SteadyShelf doesn't do landed cost calculations. For imported blanks, add freight and duty to your supplier cost manually in a spreadsheet if you need true per-unit cost. SteadyShelf's job is to tell you what to order and when, not to price your margin for you.
