Inventory by store type

Inventory management for Shopify mattress brands

Mattress brands juggle a small number of models but a large number of size and firmness variants, each with its own slow-moving, bulky inventory. Getting reorder timing wrong means either tying up cash in a warehouse full of queens or losing a sale because the king firm is backordered for six weeks.

The inventory problems mattress brands run into

  • Bulky, low-turn inventory. Mattresses take up pallet space and tie up cash, so overordering is expensive and underordering means losing a sale to a competitor with faster shipping.
  • SKU explosion from size and firmness. A single model often comes in twin, full, queen, king, and California king, each in soft, medium, and firm, which multiplies your variant count fast.
  • Freight and case pack constraints. Mattresses ship on pallets or in bulky cartons, so suppliers often set minimum order quantities by pallet or truckload, not by unit.
  • Long and variable supplier lead times. Whether you source from a domestic foam manufacturer or an overseas hybrid spring factory, lead times can swing widely depending on raw material availability and freight capacity.
  • Bundled accessories complicate forecasting. Pillows, protectors, and bed frames often sell alongside mattresses as bundles or add-ons, but each needs its own demand forecast since attach rates vary by model.

Seasonality and demand

Mattress sales cluster around a few predictable peaks: Presidents Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and Black Friday through Cyber Monday. Many brands run their biggest promotions during these windows, which means demand spikes sharply for a few weeks and then drops off. Because lead times for foam and spring components can stretch to weeks, you need to place purchase orders well before the promotion starts, not when the sales spike begins. Plan your order-by dates around your supplier's lead time plus the promotion start date, and build in extra safety stock for your bestselling sizes, usually queen and king, since those run out first.

Suppliers, lead times and minimums

Mattress suppliers generally fall into three types: domestic foam and hybrid manufacturers, overseas component suppliers for springs and covers, and private label factories that produce finished mattresses to your spec. Domestic manufacturers often turn around orders faster than overseas suppliers, which often take several weeks once you include production and freight time. MOQs are typically set by pallet or truckload rather than by unit, so a case pack might mean 4 queens or 2 kings per pallet. Private label and custom spec orders usually carry higher minimums and longer lead times than standard core models.

Worked example

Suppose your queen hybrid mattress sells 2 units a day on average. Your foam supplier has a lead time of 20 days, and you keep 5 safety days to cover freight delays. Your reorder point is 2 x (20 + 5) = 50 units. You currently have 30 units on hand and 10 on order. If you want 30 days of cover, your order quantity is 2 x (20 + 30) - (30 + 10) = 100 - 40 = 60 units. Since the supplier ships in pallets of 4, SteadyShelf rounds that up to 60 units, already a clean multiple, so no adjustment is needed.

A simple system to start this week

  1. List every mattress model as separate SKUs by size and firmness, not as one parent product.
  2. Enter each supplier's real lead time and minimum order quantity, including pallet or truckload minimums.
  3. Set safety days higher for your slowest-shipping supplier to avoid stockouts during freight delays.
  4. Review the weekly reorder email before your peak season starts, not during it.
  5. Confirm case pack rounding matches your actual pallet configuration for each size.
  6. Track any discontinued fabric or foam batches manually outside SteadyShelf.

How SteadyShelf fits mattress brands

SteadyShelf forecasts demand per size and firmness variant, accounts for each supplier's lead time, and rounds order quantities to your pallet or case pack minimums, which fits how mattress suppliers actually ship. It will not handle multi-location transfers if you stock inventory in more than one warehouse or showroom, and it does not track lot or expiry data, so you still need a manual process for any foam batch or fabric cover rotation concerns.

FAQ

Does SteadyShelf track expiry or shelf life for foam and hybrid mattresses?

No. Mattresses sold in compressed boxes do not expire like food, but foam and hybrid materials can degrade slowly if stored too long, and floor models or showroom units wear out. SteadyShelf has no lot or expiry tracking. If you stock older firmness formulations or discontinued fabric covers, track those manually with a spreadsheet or a note field, and prioritize selling through old batches before new ones arrive.

Can SteadyShelf handle pallet-based minimum order quantities from my mattress suppliers?

Set up each size and firmness as its own SKU with its own supplier and case pack. If your supplier ships queen and king on pallets of 4 and 2, enter those as the case pack sizes. SteadyShelf will round suggested order quantities up to full pallets automatically, so you are not stuck ordering 3 units when the supplier only ships in twos or fours.

Does SteadyShelf work if I sell the same mattress models on Shopify and through a wholesale or showroom channel?

No. If you sell direct and wholesale through separate systems, or sync to Amazon or a showroom POS, SteadyShelf only manages the Shopify side. You will need to manually account for stock committed elsewhere when approving suggested orders, or keep a buffer quantity in your safety stock to cover units sold through other channels before your Shopify count updates.
