Inventory by store type
Inventory management for Shopify leathercraft supply stores
Leathercraft supply stores juggle hides sold by square footage, hardware sold by the piece, and tools that barely move but kill a sale when out of stock. SteadyShelf keeps reorder timing straight across all three without you tracking spreadsheets.
The inventory problems leathercraft supply stores run into
- Hide variation by size and grade. A single SKU like "Vegetable Tan Shoulder, 4-5oz" might actually cover a range of square footage per hide, so your "units" are really an approximation and reorder math needs to use a consistent counting unit (hides, not square feet).
- Hardware with huge SKU counts, low velocity each. Rivets, buckles, snaps and D-rings come in many finishes and sizes, so you can have hundreds of active SKUs where most sell a handful of units a month, making manual reorder tracking impractical.
- Tools that sell rarely but cost a sale when missing. Stitching awls, edge bevelers and skiving knives might sell once a week, but a customer building a project list often wants everything in one order, so a stockout on one tool can cost you the whole cart.
- Supplier minimums that force bulk buying. Many hide and hardware suppliers set case packs or dollar minimums, so you end up overordering slow movers just to hit a threshold, tying up cash in stock that moves slowly.
- Dye and finish shelf considerations. Leather dyes, edge paints and finishes can separate or degrade over time, and SteadyShelf has no way to track that for you, so you need a manual process for checking age on these specific items.
Seasonality and demand
Leathercraft supply demand usually picks up ahead of major gift seasons (people making wallets and bags as presents) and again in late winter and spring when hobbyists start new projects indoors. Back-to-school and fall also bring a bump from hobbyists and small-batch makers restocking for holiday production runs. Because hide and tool suppliers can be slow to restock, especially for imported tanned leather, place orders for your core hides and best-selling hardware well before these peaks rather than waiting for stock to run low. Use your own sales history from the prior year as a guide, since generic seasonal assumptions will not match your specific customer base of hobbyists versus small production sellers.
Suppliers, lead times and minimums
You will typically buy from domestic tanneries or leather wholesalers for hides, hardware importers or distributors for rivets, buckles and buckskin, and tool manufacturers or specialty tool distributors for cutting and stitching tools. Hide suppliers often have minimum order quantities by weight or hide count and lead times that stretch longer for specialty tans or colors. Hardware suppliers frequently sell in case packs (boxes of 100 or 1,000 rivets, for example) and overseas hardware or tool suppliers often take several weeks to ship. Tool suppliers are usually the most reliable on lead time but may have per-item minimums on wholesale accounts.
Worked example
Say you sell "Brass Line 24 Rivets (100-pack)" and average 2 packs a day. Your supplier's lead time is 10 days and you keep 4 days of safety stock, so your reorder point is 2 x (10 + 4) = 28 packs. You currently have 10 packs on hand and 0 on order, and you want 20 days of cover, so order quantity = 2 x (10 + 20) - (10 + 0) = 60 - 10 = 50 packs. Since the supplier sells in case packs of 25, SteadyShelf would round that up to 50 packs, which happens to divide evenly, and flag the order-by date based on your 10-day lead time.
Try it with your own numbers in the reorder point calculator, or size your buffer with the safety stock calculator.
A simple system to start this week
- List every hide, hardware, and tool SKU in Shopify with accurate on-hand counts, especially hides where unit definition matters.
- Enter each supplier's lead time and case pack or dollar minimum into SteadyShelf so order quantities round correctly.
- Set safety stock days higher for your slowest-shipping overseas hardware or tool suppliers.
- Review the weekly reorder email and approve draft purchase orders rather than letting them sit.
- Set a manual reminder to check dye and finish inventory for age, since SteadyShelf does not track expiry.
- When partial shipments arrive (common with backordered hardware), receive them into Shopify as they come in so forecasts stay accurate.
How SteadyShelf fits leathercraft supply stores
SteadyShelf handles the reorder math and purchase order drafting across your hides, hardware, and tools, which is the daily grind in this business. It will not track dye or finish shelf life, so you still need a manual check for aging chemical products. It also will not manage bundles like "starter wallet kits" as a single forecasted unit, so track the component SKUs individually instead.

FAQ
Can SteadyShelf account for hides that vary in square footage within the same SKU?
SteadyShelf forecasts and reorders based on unit counts you define, such as "hides" or "sides," not actual square footage. If your hides vary significantly in size within a SKU, consider splitting them into separate SKUs by size or grade so the unit counts stay meaningful for reorder math.
Does SteadyShelf track shelf life for dyes and finishes?
No. SteadyShelf does not do lot or expiry tracking. For dyes, edge paints, and finishes that can degrade, keep a simple manual log of receipt dates and check it periodically, separate from your SteadyShelf reorder workflow.
Can it bundle a "beginner tooling kit" of several SKUs into one forecasted product?
No, SteadyShelf does not handle bundles. If you sell kits, forecast and reorder the individual components, such as the mallet, swivel knife, and stamping set, as separate SKUs, and make sure your on-hand counts reflect units pulled for kit assembly.
