Inventory management for Shopify keto product brands

Keto brands juggle a lot of flavors, sizes, and bundles on top of ingredients that do not sit on a shelf forever. This page covers how to run inventory for a Shopify keto store without guessing at reorder timing.

The inventory problems keto product brands run into

  • Short shelf life on baked and dairy-adjacent items. Keto cookies, bars, and anything with nut flours or butter substitutes can go stale or rancid faster than shelf-stable snacks, so overordering ties up cash in product you may have to discount or toss.
  • Variant sprawl across flavors and sizes. A single keto snack line often splits into 6-10 SKUs once you count flavors, box sizes, and multipacks, and each one sells at a different pace, making manual reorder math slow and error-prone.
  • Co-packer minimums that do not match your sales rate. Many keto brands use a co-packer or contract manufacturer with a minimum production run, which can mean ordering three months of a slow flavor just to meet the minimum.
  • Ingredient-driven supply gaps. Keto products lean on specific inputs like MCT oil, allulose, or monk fruit, and if your co-packer's supplier runs short, your reorder lead time can stretch without warning.
  • Bundles and variety packs complicating counts. Many keto brands sell variety packs or bundles made from single-flavor stock, and these need to be tracked and deducted manually since SteadyShelf does not manage bundle-to-component relationships.

Seasonality and demand

Keto brands usually see demand climb around January as new year resolutions hit, and again in early spring ahead of summer. Keto-friendly snacks and meal replacements also spike around major holidays when people want something to bring to a gathering that fits their diet. Plan for these peaks by placing orders earlier than usual in November and December, since co-packers and ingredient suppliers often get backed up with holiday volume from multiple brands at once. Build extra safety stock days into your slow months so you are not caught short when the next peak starts, and expect post-holiday dips in February as people's routines change.

Suppliers, lead times and minimums

Most keto brands work with a contract co-packer or small-batch manufacturer rather than buying finished goods off a shelf. These co-packers often run production for several brands, so lead times can stretch if they are mid-run for someone else, and domestic co-packers often take a few weeks while anything involving overseas ingredient sourcing can take longer. Minimum order quantities are usually set by production batch size, not by case count, so a "minimum" might be several hundred units of one flavor even if you only need half that. Case packs are typically set at 12 or 24 units per box, and some suppliers will not break a case for partial shipments.

Worked example

Say you sell a 12-pack of keto chocolate chip cookies that moves 6 units a day on average. Your co-packer has a lead time of 3 weeks (21 days) and you want 10 days of safety stock, so your reorder point is 6 x (21 + 10) = 186 units. You want to carry 30 days of cover on top of lead time, so order quantity = 6 x (21 + 30) minus (40 on hand + 0 on order) = 306 - 40 = 266 units, which SteadyShelf would round up to your case pack of 24, landing on 288 units ordered.

A simple system to start this week

  1. List every flavor, size, and bundle as a separate variant in Shopify, even if they share a base recipe.
  2. Get real case pack sizes and minimum order quantities from each co-packer or supplier in writing.
  3. Enter each supplier's typical lead time into SteadyShelf, including extra time if they also pack for other brands.
  4. Set safety stock days higher for your slowest-moving or most perishable items so you are not pressured into rushed reorders.
  5. Track lot numbers and best-by dates outside SteadyShelf, using your co-packer's documentation or a simple spreadsheet.
  6. Review your weekly reorder email against actual shelf life left on hand before approving any purchase order.

How SteadyShelf fits keto product brands

SteadyShelf fits keto brands well for the variant-heavy, repeat-order side of the business: tracking flavors and sizes separately, rounding orders to your co-packer's case packs, and sending the purchase order on time. It will not track expiry or lot numbers, so you still need a separate system or your co-packer's records to manage shelf life. It also will not manage bundles or variety packs as combined products, so you need to track those components yourself.

FAQ

Does SteadyShelf track expiry dates on my keto products?

No. SteadyShelf does not track lot numbers or expiry dates. Keep using your supplier's lot sheets or a simple spreadsheet for that, and set your safety stock and reorder timing so you are not sitting on old stock for months. SteadyShelf will tell you when to reorder based on sales speed, but you still need to check dates when stock arrives.

How does SteadyShelf handle a product with many flavors and sizes?

Set up each flavor and size as its own variant in Shopify with its own case pack size. SteadyShelf forecasts and reorders at the variant level, so a 12-pack of chocolate chip cookies and a 12-pack of peanut butter are tracked separately, each with its own order-by date and quantity.

Can SteadyShelf manage stock across my 3PL and my own storage unit?

SteadyShelf handles one Shopify store and one stockroom or 3PL location feeding it. If you split inventory across a fulfillment center and a home office, or send stock to Amazon FBA separately, you will need to manage those transfers yourself. SteadyShelf's numbers assume the stock count in Shopify is your real, sellable count.
