Inventory by store type
Inventory management for Shopify fitness equipment stores
Fitness equipment stores carry heavy, bulky SKUs alongside small accessories, and running out of a popular dumbbell weight or resistance band color costs you sales fast. SteadyShelf keeps reorder timing and quantities straight across your whole catalog.
The inventory problems fitness equipment stores run into
- Heavy freight with long lead times. Barbells, racks, and plates often ship by freight, not parcel, and overseas suppliers often take several weeks to produce and ship. If you wait until stock hits zero to reorder, you will be out of stock for a long stretch.
- Weight and size variants multiply SKUs. A single dumbbell line can have ten weight points, and a rack can have multiple color or capacity options. Each variant sells at a different rate, so one reorder point for the whole product line does not work.
- Bulky items tie up cash and space. Treadmills and power racks cost more per unit and take up warehouse space, so overordering is expensive and underordering loses sales. You need quantities sized to real demand, not round numbers.
- Case packs and pallet minimums. Many suppliers only sell resistance bands, yoga mats, or plates in case packs, and some require pallet-quantity minimums on heavy goods. Order quantities need to round up to what the supplier will actually ship.
- New Year and resolution demand spikes. Home gym equipment and accessories see a sharp jump in interest around January and after major holidays, and missing that window on bestsellers is costly.
Seasonality and demand
Fitness equipment has a well known peak around January as people start new fitness routines, plus smaller bumps around summer and back-to-school when people restart routines. Home gym equipment in particular can also spike when gyms close or during cold weather months when people prefer working out at home. Because lead times on heavy equipment are long, you need to place orders for your January bestsellers in the fall, not in December. Plan safety stock higher on core strength and cardio items heading into these windows, and review your sales history each year to catch which accessories (bands, mats, recovery tools) move with the same seasonal pattern.
Suppliers, lead times and minimums
Fitness equipment suppliers split into a few types: domestic distributors who hold stock of popular brands and ship faster, and overseas manufacturers (often for private label plates, bands, mats, and racks) who require longer production and shipping time. Heavy equipment suppliers frequently set MOQs by pallet or container, while accessories like bands, mats, and gloves usually ship in case packs of a dozen or more. Freight shipments for racks, treadmills, and plates typically need more lead time buffer than small parcel accessory orders, and you should track those separately.
Worked example
Say you sell an adjustable dumbbell set averaging 2 units a day. Your overseas supplier has a lead time of 30 days, and you want 10 days of safety stock. Reorder point = 2 x (30 + 10) = 80 units, so when your stock hits 80 you need to place an order. If you want 45 days of total cover and currently have 60 on hand with 0 on order, order quantity = 2 x (30 + 45) - (60 + 0) = 150 - 60 = 90 units, which you would round up to 96 to match the supplier's case pack of 24.
Try it with your own numbers in the reorder point calculator, or size your buffer with the safety stock calculator.
A simple system to start this week
- List every variant (weight, color, size) as a separate SKU with its own sales history, not grouped by product.
- Record each supplier's real lead time, separating freight items (racks, treadmills) from parcel items (bands, small accessories).
- Set safety stock days higher on your top sellers heading into January and other known demand spikes.
- Confirm each supplier's case pack size and any pallet or container minimums so order quantities round up correctly.
- Connect SteadyShelf to your Shopify store and let it calculate order-by dates and quantities per SKU automatically.
- Review and approve draft purchase orders weekly so they go out to suppliers before you hit your reorder point.
How SteadyShelf fits fitness equipment stores
SteadyShelf forecasts demand per variant, accounts for seasonality like the January rush, and tells you when to order from each supplier based on their lead time, rounding quantities to case packs and pallet minimums. It drafts the purchase order and emails it to your supplier once you approve it, then receives stock into Shopify, including partial freight deliveries. It does not handle multi-location transfers, so if you stock equipment across a warehouse and a storefront, you will need to manage that split manually.

FAQ
Does SteadyShelf track expiry or shelf life on protein powders or supplements I sell alongside equipment?
No. SteadyShelf does not do lot or expiry tracking. For perishable supplements, keep a separate log of expiry dates by batch, and use SteadyShelf's reorder suggestions only for timing and quantity, not freshness.
Can SteadyShelf handle bundles, like a home gym kit with a rack, bar, and plates sold as one listing?
No. SteadyShelf does not do bundle or BOM management. You will need to forecast and reorder the individual components separately, and manage the bundle listing's stock based on the component with the lowest availability.
I stock the same equipment in a warehouse and a retail showroom. Does SteadyShelf split orders between locations?
No. SteadyShelf does not do multi-location transfers. It forecasts and reorders based on total stock in Shopify, so you will still need to decide how to split incoming stock between your locations.
