What is Stock rotation?

Stock rotation is the practice of selling or using older inventory before newer inventory, so stock does not sit on the shelf until it expires or goes out of style.

For a small Shopify store, stock rotation matters most when products have a shelf life or go out of season, like coffee beans, candles with scent batches, or seasonal apparel. If you keep adding new stock to the front and selling that first, older batches sit at the back and can expire, fade, or become last season's style, which you then have to discount or write off.

In practice this means organizing your storage so older batches ship first, usually called FIFO, and checking received dates against what you already have before restocking shelves or bins. For food, cosmetics, and supplements, rotation also protects you from selling expired stock to customers.

Example

A candle store receives 50 units of a seasonal scent in August and 50 more of the same scent in October. If staff place the October units in front, customers buy those first and the August batch sits unsold for months. With proper stock rotation, the August units move to the front and the October units go behind them, so the older batch sells first and nothing goes stale on the shelf.

Common mistakes

  • Placing new deliveries in front of older stock instead of behind it.
  • Not tracking receipt dates or batch numbers, so nobody knows which units are older.
  • Ignoring rotation for non-perishable goods and letting style or season cause the same kind of dead stock.

Stock rotation and SteadyShelf

SteadyShelf does not manage physical stock rotation, but its demand forecasts and order-by dates help you avoid over-ordering stock that would sit too long and need rotation in the first place.

FAQ

Is stock rotation the same as FIFO?

They are closely linked. FIFO, first in first out, is the accounting and inventory method that assumes the oldest stock is sold first. Stock rotation is the physical practice on the shelf or in the warehouse that makes FIFO actually happen, by placing older stock where it gets picked or sold before newer stock.

Does stock rotation matter if my products do not expire?

Yes, though less urgently. Apparel, seasonal gift items, and trend-based products can lose value if older stock sits too long and goes out of style. Rotating stock still helps you sell through older inventory before it becomes dead stock you have to discount heavily.
