What is Order fulfillment?

Order fulfillment is the process of receiving a customer order, picking and packing the items, and shipping them to the customer.

For a small Shopify store, order fulfillment is what happens after a sale, not before it. It covers picking the right variant off the shelf, packing it, printing a label, and getting it shipped, whether you do this yourself or use a third party.

Fulfillment speed and accuracy depend on having stock in hand. If a variant is out of stock, fulfillment stalls and the order sits as a backorder or gets cancelled. Keeping enough stock of your fast sellers is what keeps fulfillment running smoothly.

Example

A candle store gets an order for 3 units of a vanilla candle. The owner pulls 3 units from the shelf, packs them in a box, prints a shipping label, and hands the package to the courier the same day. That whole sequence, from order to shipped package, is order fulfillment.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing fulfillment with shipping only, when it also includes picking and packing.
  • Not having enough stock on hand, which delays fulfillment even if the process itself is fast.
  • Treating fulfillment speed as separate from inventory planning, when stockouts are a common cause of slow fulfillment.

FAQ

Does order fulfillment include inventory management?

Not directly. Order fulfillment is about processing and shipping orders. Inventory management makes sure the stock needed for fulfillment is available, but the two are separate functions.

What causes fulfillment delays most often in a small store?

Running out of stock on popular variants is one of the most common causes. If the item is not on the shelf, picking and packing cannot start.
