Inventory glossary
What is Net 30 payment terms?
Net 30 payment terms means the buyer must pay the supplier's invoice in full within 30 days of the invoice date (or sometimes the delivery date).
Net 30 gives a small store breathing room between receiving stock and paying for it. You can sell some of the inventory before the bill is due, which helps cash flow, especially when you are placing a large order ahead of a busy season.
When you negotiate with suppliers, ask for net 30 instead of paying upfront or on delivery. Track due dates per purchase order so you pay on time and keep the relationship healthy, since suppliers often offer better terms or priority to buyers who pay reliably.
Example
A candle store orders 200 units from a supplier on March 1 with net 30 terms. The invoice is dated March 1, so payment is due by March 31. The store sells 120 of those candles before the invoice is even due, using that revenue to help cover the payment.
Common mistakes
- Confusing net 30 from the invoice date with net 30 from the delivery date, which can shift the due date by days or weeks.
- Missing the due date and damaging supplier trust or losing the terms for future orders.
- Assuming all suppliers offer net 30 by default when many new or small suppliers require upfront payment or deposits.

FAQ
Does net 30 start from the order date or the invoice date?
It is based on the invoice date, not the order date. Some suppliers instead count from the delivery date, so check the specific terms on the invoice or supplier agreement.
Can a small store negotiate net 30 with a new supplier?
It is possible but not guaranteed. New suppliers often require upfront payment or a deposit until you build a payment history, then may offer net 30 after a few successful orders.
