What is GTIN?

GTIN stands for Global Trade Item Number.

For a small Shopify store, a GTIN is what lets your product be recognized across barcode scanners, supplier systems, and shopping channels like Google Shopping. If each variant has a clean, unique GTIN, scanning at receiving is faster and there is less risk of mixing up similar products.

Use GTINs consistently in your Shopify product and variant data. Get the correct GTIN from each supplier for every SKU they sell you, and do not reuse a GTIN for a different variant even if the product looks similar, like a different candle scent or shirt size.

Example

A candle store sells a 3-wick jar candle in three scents: vanilla, cedar, and citrus. Each scent is a separate variant with its own GTIN, even though the jar and box look identical. When the supplier ships 150 vanilla candles, the warehouse scans the vanilla GTIN and the stock goes into the correct variant, not a generic candle bucket.

Common mistakes

  • Using one GTIN for a product with multiple variants instead of one per variant.
  • Reusing an old GTIN for a new product after discontinuing the original item.
  • Entering the GTIN with typos or extra spaces, which breaks barcode scanning and channel listings.

FAQ

Is GTIN the same as a SKU?

No. A GTIN is a standardized global identifier used for barcodes and trade, while a SKU is an internal code you or your supplier create to track inventory. The same product can have one GTIN but a different SKU in your system than in your supplier's system.

Do I need a GTIN for every product I sell on Shopify?

Not always, but it helps. Some sales channels like Google Shopping require a GTIN to list a product, and having one makes barcode scanning for receiving and fulfillment much easier.
