What is Freight forwarder?

A freight forwarder is a company that arranges shipping of goods from a supplier to your store or warehouse, handling transport, customs paperwork and sometimes storage along the way.

If you buy from overseas suppliers, a freight forwarder moves your goods from the factory to a port, through customs, and on to your door. They do not manufacture anything, they coordinate carriers, documents and timing so your order arrives in one piece without you booking each leg yourself.

For a small store, the forwarder you use affects your lead time and how predictable it is. A reliable forwarder with consistent transit times makes it easier to plan reorder dates. A slow or inconsistent one adds uncertainty you need to cover with extra safety stock.

Example

A candle store in Texas orders 2,000 units from a supplier in Vietnam. The supplier hands the shipment to a freight forwarder, who books ocean freight, clears customs in Los Angeles, and arranges trucking to the store's warehouse. The whole trip takes 35 days, so the store places its order 35 days before it expects to run low on stock.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the forwarder's quoted transit time always holds, without a buffer for customs delays.
  • Not clarifying who handles customs clearance and duties, the forwarder or the store.
  • Switching forwarders without re-checking lead time, which throws off reorder dates based on the old timeline.

FAQ

Does a freight forwarder own the goods during shipping?

No. The forwarder arranges and coordinates transport, but ownership stays with the buyer or seller depending on the agreed shipping terms.

Do small Shopify stores need a freight forwarder?

Only if importing in bulk from overseas suppliers. Stores buying from local suppliers usually do not need one.
