What is Aged inventory report?
An aged inventory report is a list of stock on hand sorted by how long each item has been sitting in inventory, usually grouped into bands like 0-30 days, 31-60 days, 61-90 days and 90 days plus.
For a small Shopify store, this report tells you which products are turning fast and which are quietly tying up cash. A candle that has sat on the shelf for six months is costing you money every month, even if it never shows up as a loss on paper until you discount it or write it off.
Use it to decide what to put on sale, what to stop reordering, and what to bundle or clear out before it becomes dead stock. Checking it monthly or quarterly helps you catch slow movers early, before the pile gets big enough to hurt your cash flow.
Example
A candle store pulls its aged inventory report in January. It finds 40 units of a pumpkin spice candle that have been in stock for 95 days, worth 400 dollars at 10 dollars cost each. The owner marks them down to clear space, instead of reordering more for next winter.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring the report until a big clearance sale is unavoidable.
- Looking only at units and not at the dollar value tied up in old stock.
- Not separating seasonal items, which are expected to age until their season returns, from genuinely slow sellers.

FAQ
How is an aged inventory report different from a regular stock report?
A regular stock report shows quantity on hand right now. An aged inventory report adds a time dimension, showing how long that stock has been sitting unsold, which helps you spot slow movers instead of just totals.
How often should a small store run this report?
Monthly works for most small stores. Seasonal businesses may want to check right after each season ends, to decide what to discount before the next buying cycle starts.
